Bringing Ingenuity into Graphic Design

I had never realized how transforming ten weeks could be. During these 10 weeks of my internship at JLL, I worked with seven different teams of senior graphic designers in seven different business lines. I knew very little during the first week of my internship, but now, I have learned a lot, and I am confident that graphic design and digital arts are what I want to steer my career toward.

For my final project, I chose the “Student Housing” team and recreated the offering memorandum of the property in Hawaii called “Hale Mahana”. I created a logo, multiple design elements, a book of the memorandum, and an augmented reality experience—all centered around Hale Mahana. I will never forget the reaction and feedback I received from the JLL team of graphic designers, my manager, the producers, and the analysts present during my presentation. Rachel, who inspires me a lot, said that I brought ingenuity into the industry, and the work that I did could revolutionize the real estate industry. Madi, my mentor, said that she was very proud of my growth. Andy, the senior designer at JLL, called me the “Best Intern ever”. All the feedback I received is very important to me because it validates my dreams and my ability in the field of design. It has fueled my passion, with a sustainable perpetual source of energy. During my internship, I have reflected a lot on my career goals, and I feel optimistic about it.

I have delved more into Augmented Reality during this internship. As I mentioned before, for my final project in JLL, I recreated a flyer of the offering memorandum. I used interactivity and animation in design elements, used UI/UX design principles instead of printing and publishing, targeting the digital audience, and my favorite—created an AR experience to view the location. For it, I learned geospatial creation of locations. This was an innovative approach to give the clients a more realistic image of the properties with the blend of the digital and physical world through AR. AR is growing, and software like Geospatial Creator is under construction. I am excited to explore this field more during my independent learning block for Augmented Reality. I am glad that I took Professor McKenzie’s class on Augmented Reality, which helped me imagine the idea in the first place, and then in the larger arc, for introducing me to this form of art/skill that has made me very interested. I am grateful to my professors and staff at Cornell who have never discouraged me from changing something and pursuing ingenuity.

I stand by what I wrote before the start of the internship:

“Ten years from now, I will be sitting at my work desk looking over the terrains and mountains of Pokhara, with book covers that I designed, children's movies that I animated, and the artworks that I created over the years. I will be glad that I got and took the opportunity to intern at JLL as a graphic design intern back in college because that was the beginning of it all—a push that I needed to jumpstart my career in something that I was passionate about.”
