Week 1:
Mayo Clinic
May 28, 2013
My first week at the Mayo Clinic consisted of settling into my apartment and participating in orientation and training activities. A two-day orientation served to provide new employees information about the history and values of Mayo Clinic. The Mayo is very passionate about their history and strives to keep it alive everyday. It is said that no meeting at Mayo is complete without a quote from the Mayo brothers. I learned a few interesting things about the Mayo including: they have over 1 million patients a year, they are #18 in the top recognized brands in the nation, and the Rochester campus has over 80 buildings.
The rest of the week I completed human subjects training and read a few articles regarding sleep architecture and the R & K scoring criteria for the different stages of sleep. I will begin to use this scoring system in the following week. In addition, I read articles to prepare for a survey project I will be assisting with about REM Behavioral Disorder (RBD). RBD is a sleep disorder where people act out their dreams during REM sleep. This project will be looking at the correlation between RBD and Parkinson’s Disease.
In my free time I explored downtown Rochester. This city has many shops and restaurants that I will have to check out during my time here.
