Week 5:
Business as Usual
July 5, 2016
June 29 – July 6
As I enter into the latter part of my Fellowship, George and Liz were on vacation for most of the week, so things were a little bit more self-directed. I wasn’t given any new assignments, so it was business as usual, taking care of my regular duties.
We had a difficult time finding volunteers to help man the food trucks this week, possibly because of the holiday, so I had to work them mostly on my own. Everything turned out alright since I know how to set up the bins and everything by myself, but more help would have been appreciated. As such, I crafted an open call for volunteers. This write-up was fairly short and to the point, simply outlining why we collected the compost and why we need help.
Before she went on vacation, Liz was kind enough to take me on a tour of the U of I campus, pointing out all the important buildings and what their purpose was. Since I had never had the chance to really explore Iowa City before, I was excited about the opportunity. (I was especially thrilled to finally see Kinnick Stadium since my entire family is full of Hawks fans!)
I really got the sense of just how big the U of I campus is, especially when compared to Cornell. Living in the Cornell bubble for most of the year really makes you forget how different Cornell is from other colleges, and this campus tour really gave me that perspective. I’m just really grateful to Cornell and the Fellows program for affording me the opportunity me to intern here. Even though this week hadn’t offered anything really exciting I still was able to get out explore and learn something new about where I am living and working.
