Week 8:
Saying Goodbye

Jon & Jean Reynolds Fellow in Legal Services

Octavia Legal Associates | Madison, Wisconsin

July 17, 2019

It is odd to think, but this is my last week as a Fellow at Octavia Legal. This week flew by so quickly it hardly seemed like I spent a full five days in the office. The last two days were filled with saying goodbye and going out for lunch. Although, as always, there was still work to be done. This week I worked closely with several women who were in the country on J1 visa applications. While I can not get into the specifics, they were having a dispute with their employer. This dispute was only short-lived. It is interesting how quickly a dispute can be solved if the other party is willing to work with you to find a common solution to the problem. Anyhow, the women who were working in the country were relieved to have the situation resolved, and I got to practice my Spanish a little more.

Overall, my experiences this summer at Octavia Legal have helped me know for sure that I want to move into the law profession. For me, I needed to open myself up to this experience before my senior year, so I can be confident when applying to law schools that I know what I want to do. I cannot thank my bosses enough for taking a risk and giving me a fantastic opportunity to work alongside them this summer. In addition to that, I now know, in the practical sense, that the experiences I have had at Cornell have prepared me for the feature I hope to achieve.

Because who doesn’t love three monitorsWith that being said, I now have to spend the rest of my summer split between two jobs to reach that dream. Hopefully, at some point, I will find a weekend to head up to the family cabin to enjoy the lake. Oh, I almost forgot, I went to court on Tuesday to resolve my parking ticket, and the City Prosecutor dismissed the entire charge. While living in the big city came with many unique challenges I will not miss, I must say Madison will always have its charm in my mind.
