Week 4:
Hitting a Speed Bump
July 5, 2020
This week it has felt a little bit like I hit a wall. Maybe that is not quite right because I do not feel completely halted. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say I feel like I have hit a speed bump on my internship journey. I say this because 1) I had loads of internet problems this week making doing school work/ studying outside of the internship difficult and 2) COVID-19 cases are rising again making it so we have to be extra conscious inside and outside of work 3) it was a short week because of July 4th so maybe that’s why things feel off.
First off, I had lots of internet problems like I stated above. Our WiFi went out in my apartment on Tuesday making it so I could not study for the LSAT, watch shows, do home workouts, attend my Skype Spanish classes or update my professor about my internship progress. Once our internet was fixed on Thursday, at work we use a crucial software and the software stopped working! Since we all need this software, we had to call it an early day Thursday and then the long weekend began.

Besides having a few difficulties I have been able to work with the attorney and legal assistant quite a bit and I really feel a bond building between our little team. They are very strong and driven individuals who have been great mentors as I have learned the ropes of immigration law. I have been helping clients apply or renew work VISAS this past week which has been very fun and educational learning about this application process. Next week I will be starting a big project for the legal team where I will go through all our files from the past 7 years of our existence and take down the type of cases we have taken on and whether we have won or lost these cases. I am really excited to do this because it is very organizational based which I love but also I will be able to learn more about different immigration cases and how they work from this project.
Besides working I have been studying for the LSAT which I have decided I will be taken at the end of August, going on morning jogs, and getting to explore Austin more on this long weekend. This past weekend my friend from Cornell came to visit me and we went to Lady Bird Lake, named after Lyndon B. Johnson’s wife and swam some. It was a nice weekend to get to explore and see more of Austin and have someone to explore it with.

Brena is a sociology/anthropology and Spanish major from Prairie Village, Kansas.
