Week 10:
Friendship in the Theater

Slater Fellow in Arts Administration & Theatre

Creede Repertory Theatre | Creede, Colorado

August 8, 2017

It’s getting closer to the end of my fellowship and I am getting sad! I am trying to make the most of my remaining time here by doing as much as possible. Creede, CO always has a bunch of things to do because it is a tourist town and because CRT creates events for it’s company members. The featured photo is of a group of us getting together to play Diplomacy. It was fun to play with people from other departments on our day off.

A group of people from Spar City, a town near Creede, were seeking some actors to liven up their party and I volunteered for the job. I figured it would be fun and similar to improv. They asked us to dress as old western saloon girls and bartenders and lead group dances and keep people energized at their event celebrating the 125th birthday of Spar City. There were three of us attending and we got fitting for some old western costumes and drove out to their little community hall. It was so fun! We served drinks and I danced with all sorts of people including the cutest little girl who kept asking me to dance until she had to go to bed. Again something I wasn’t expecting to be so fun that was a great experience.

This week I also attended a workshop about voice acting from Rick Wasserman, an actor in 2 of our shows. He does a lot of voiceover work for commercials and the voice of AMC tv ads. He was also the voice of Hulk and Thor in two difference animated series. So he has had a lot of experience in the voice acting industry and gave us a low down on what to expect in an audition and in actually working in a voice recording booth. The biggest thing I took away was the most you can do to make yourself a valuable auditioner is be as authentic to yourself as you can with anything. Because if you want to stand out as unique being you with all your quirks is as unique as you can get. Play to your strong skills and know where your pitfalls are so you can prepare to combat them or capitalize on them. It made me hopeful that someone who is successful in the industry was so accepting and positive.

I am finally feeling the perfect groove at Creede and I am leaving next week. I am working to tie up loose ends on all my projects but I am gonna miss working with all these people.
